Total Fitness Welcomes Sue Maes
by Catherine Carrigan, catherine@totalfitness.net
I am pleased to announce that Sue Maes of London, Ontario, Canada, has joined Total Fitness.
Most of my clients and many of my students have heard me talk about my mentor in healing. Sue Maes is
the person you have heard me rave about.
Years ago, Sue and I both started in Educational Kinesiology. We both taught Brain Gym to students
who wanted to improve their schoolwork, athletics and performance in virtually any endeavour you could
imagine. But her studies, teaching and experience as a healer went way beyond what I had learned up to
that point.
I first met Sue at a Brain Gym conference in Toronto when she gave a lecture about the neurophysiology
of the brain. She blew everybody out of the water with a scientific explanation of how we were changing
our clients with kinesiology.
It was the following year at the next Brain Gym conference where Sue Maes changed my life.
I was waiting in a hallway to give a talk about my book, Healing Depression: A Holistic Guide.
Sue did maybe no more than 10 minutes of kinesiology with me and in that short time I realized
she had permanently altered the course of my life. I remember thinking, "I want to be able to do
what Sue can do."
Unlike many accomplished healers who selfishly hold back their secrets, Sue is all about empowering others
to do what she can do. She lays it right out on the table, tells you what to do, how to do it and how to work
with actual humans. Years went by, and I have now taken her internship not just once but three times and studied
virtually everything she has ever taught. She is also my personal coach and has advised me through years of
growth in my business and spiritual life.
As I like to say, when you find the right teacher, they can teach you how to change a flat tire and
it will be the most profound thing you will have learned all week.
Wisely, Sue has taught me that one of the ways you can differentiate the leaders from the wannabes in
life is that true leaders are walking their talk and doing their own inner work. They are in action.
And in this important way, all of our Total Fitness practitioners are growing together - as practitioners,
friends and lightworkers who truly intend to make this planet a better place.
As I said in our newsletter earlier this year when Paula Owens of Phoenix, Arizona, joined Total Fitness,
it has been my intention to gather together the very best practitioners in fitness, nutrition and
natural healing.
One of my clients said to me the other day, "In our very first conversation, you got right to the
heart of what was really bothering me and what I needed to do to get better. Very quickly I realized
there was something different about you."
This is the skill that I have learned from Sue - how to do critical point analysis to figure out the key
areas that need improvement for an individual client and also what will work in each instance to make that
special person even better.
It's also important to remember one of the key factors to profound change: a mentor. A mentor is defined as
someone who has walked the path before you and who is willing to walk the path along side you. This is what
we Total Fitness practitioners are to our clients. We are walking our talk in the fields of fitness, nutrition
and natural healing and empowering others to do the same. Sue is so humble that long ago she told me that she
wanted us to consider ourselves as equals, but I still look to Sue for guidance whenever I get caught with my
own challenges.
Following my example, our colleague Nina Lynn has now studied extensively with Sue, and I am proud to report that
Nina is also an amazing healer in her own right.
Sue's expertise includes, but is not limited to:
Sue has taught seminars at Total Fitness here in Atlanta over the past two years. We hope to sponsor
her many times again in the future. Please join me in welcoming Sue to our fabulous team of talented
practitioners. You can contact Sue at sue@totalfitness.net or by calling her office in London, Ontario,
Canada, at 519-471-1174.
How Kinesiology Changed My Life
by Nina Lynn, nina@totalfitness.net
I first met Catherine Carrigan at a course in Holistic Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching. While there
I saw her muscle testing a young man and offering him insights into his emotional state and physical condition.
I was amazed (as was he), at her accuracy in getting to the core issues of his concerns. I decided right
then and there that I wanted to learn this mysterious technique of helping people resolve their core issues.
My other motivation was my own need for help. Catherine took me on as a client and was able to clear emotional,
energetic, and even spiritual blocks I was unknowingly holding on to, enabling me to successfully break free from
an unhealthy relationship. After that I was hooked. Over the next several years Catherine became my friend and
mentor guiding me along my journey to becoming a successful Fitness Nutrition and Natural Healing Coach with
Total Fitness.
After taking several of Catherine's courses, Willingness, Natural Vision Improvement, Nutrition Mastery, and
on my own Touch For Health, I felt ready to embark on Sue Maes's internship in Self-Empowerment Technology.
WOW, what an experience that was! Sue draws on her 30 years of experience in the fields of brain integration,
specialized kinesiology, nutrition and energetic healing to offer a comprehensive and enlightening internship
focused on training practitioners to balance clients on all levels of their being; physical, energetic, emotional,
intellectual and spiritual. Sue is a WEALTH of experience and knowledge all wrapped up in a phenomenal teacher
and a whole lot of fun.
Over the year of studying with Sue Maes in Ontario Canada, my work and personal life presented me
with several challenges ranging from threats of eviction from my business landlord, to an unexpected
pregnancy of my un-wed son's girlfriend. Thankfully, as part of our training the group spent countless
hours balancing each other for our own personal growth as well as practice. I got to see first hand how
powerful this work is as my stress level dropped and I was able to deal with each challenge successfully
and even easily. Steadily, one after the other of us became healthier and more grounded as the course
progressed. Each time we got together for the four different levels of the program I was amazed at the
personal growth and progress we had all made in our lives. It was so rewarding to be a part of both
the giving and receiving of love and support.
As for me I can absolutely say that my personal and professional life just keeps getting better having
experienced and now practicing specialized kinesiology in Los Angeles, California. My clients become
more balanced, healthy and happy every day, and I live in a state of gratitude and grace no matter
what craziness is happening all around me. Thank you Catherine and Sue!
How To Overcome Insulin Resistance and Type II Diabetes
by Paula Owens, paula@totalfitness.net
Recently I have had an increase in the number of clients presenting with insulin resistance
or type II diabetes. These health conditions are becoming epidemic in our society.
Insulin resistance happens when your cells no longer respond to insulin. The food you eat is stored as fat
and less energy is moved into your cells.
You are insulin resistant if you have fasting insulin or glucose levels as well as one or more of these health conditions:
-
Excess fat around your midsection or scapula area
-
Hypertension
-
Elevated triglycerides. Optimum range: 70-110 mg/dl or 40 to 60% of total cholesterol. Can
only be determined with a fasting sample. Triglycerides are a component of fat stored in the
tissue. High LDL with high triglycerides is a more significant indicator of risk to heart disease
than total cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dl. Triglycerides are increased with dysinsulinism (Syndrome-X/Metabolic Syndrome),
alcoholism, diabetes and primary or secondary thyroid hypofunction.
-
Low HDL levels. Optimum range: Males - above 55 mg/dl. Females - above 60 mg/dl. Should be greater than 25% of total cholesterol.
-
Type II diabetes
In type II diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells are resistant
to insulin. Insulin is necessary for your body's use of sugar. Sugar is the basic fuel for your cells
in the body, and insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the
blood instead of going into cells, it can cause the following problems:
-
Immediately, your cells may be starved for energy
-
Obesity
-
Over time, high blood glucose levels damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart
-
Higher risk of Alzheimer's disease (in diabetes, hyperinsulinemia doubles your risk for Alzheimer's compared to people without diabetes).
Remember, all hormones work in synergy with one another. The hormone you have the most control over
is insulin. You control your insulin by making healthy choices in your diet and avoiding excess carbohydrates.
What causes insulin resistance and/or diabetes?
-
Calorie restriction, skipping meals, diet pills and a diet of fast foods, boxed, canned or
microwaved foods. Unbalanced meals consisting of mostly carbohydrates, high sugar, low intake
of smart, healthy fats and protein
-
Drinking soft drinks and fruit juices
-
Stress and altered hormonal levels. Years of high adrenaline and/or cortisol levels due to poor nutrition
and lifestyle habits
-
Elevated lypogenic (fat storing) enzymes and decreased lypolytic (fat burning) enzymes
-
A sedentary lifestyle
Nutrition protocol for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:
-
Eat small mini meals 6 to 7 times per day. Include smart fats at each meal.
-
If it does not run around in the field, swim, fly or is not green - do not eat it!
-
Eliminate all boxed, canned and microwavable foods.
-
Eliminate all refined carbohydrates, grains, dairy products, fast-acting sugars (fruit juices,
soft drinks, high glycemic fruits and starchy vegetables, hydrogenated fats, alcohol, caffeine
and tobacco.
-
Eat a diet of organic proteins, non-starchy vegetables and fats (fats slow down the insulin spike).
-
Avoid Nutra Sweet, Splenda and Aspartame products as they may trigger diabetes and obesity.
-
Sweeten with stevia herb instead of sugar. Stevia will not elevate blood sugars.
Lifestyle and exercise protocol for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:
-
Obtain a fasting blood panel. For a list of suggested labs, please see page 149-150 in my book,
The Power of 4.
(Glucose levels are influenced by carbohydrate intake, stress, glandular and liver
function. Serum Glucose: Optimum range - 80-95 mg/dL. Above 105 = adrenal issues)
-
Get to bed by 10 p.m. and get up no earlier than 6 a.m. Lack of sleep disturbs lipid profile, glucose metabolism,
androgen production and blood pressure, immune system and memory,
-
Begin some form of exercise routine. Walking is excellent for diabetes. A daily 3 mph walk decreases diabetes risk by 50%!
-
Strength training is far superior to steady state aerobic exercise to prevent obesity and improve insulin
resistance. Steady state aerobic exercise elevates cortisol levels which elevates insulin levels.
-
Ensure healthy gut flora with a comprehensive digestive stool analysis.
-
Rule out food allergies. Ask your Total Fitness practitoner to help you identify foods that don't agree with your system.
-
Rule out heavy metal burdens, pesticides, other xenobiotics and inoculations. These can be locus to
pancreatic dysfunction resulting in diabetes or hypoglycemia.

Recipe: Moo-Free Breakfast Smoothie
by James Williams, james@totalfitness.net
This is smoothie is ideal for people who are sensitive to cow's milk.
Makes two and a half 16oz servings.
Ingredients:
-
1 cup of frozen or fresh berries (Carbs)
-
1 banana (Carbs)
-
2-3 tablespoons of peanut butter (Fat & Protein)
-
3 eggs (Protein & Fat)
-
5-6 table spoons Goat Yogurt (Protein & Fat)
-
Approx 1/2 pint of water to get it to the consistency you want.
-
A squirt of stevia or a teaspoon of agave for a little sweetness
Instructions:
Place all the ingredients into a blender and blend for 1-2 minutes at high speed. Adding more water
gives you a more liquid moo-free Smoothie. This means it is quicker to drink if you're in a rush,
yet the taste is a little more diluted.
Why this is healthy for you!
The recipe is safe for those who are allergic to cow's milk, one of the most common food
sensitivities. Even if you tolerate dairy, you can avoid developing food sensitivities by
remembering to rotate your foods and get plenty of variety in your diet.
The low-glycemic berries and banana are your carbohydrates, while the eggs, goat yogurt, and nut
butter provide the fat and protein. This shake is filling and will keep your blood sugar balanced for
a few hours. The eggs contain vitamins, omega fats, and choline, which is needed to make your muscle
cells move and your heart beating. The berries contain anti-oxidants to reduce free radical reactions
in your body. Enjoy the smooth rich taste of this moo-free smoothie!
